Exceptional Luxury Journeys

Travel Information for Tanzania Safaris

Essential travel guidance for guests of Exceptional Safaris Ltd planning a luxury safari in Tanzania.

Entry Requirements & Tourist Visas

Most travelers from the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe require a tourist visa to enter Tanzania.
  • Apply online via the official Tanzania eVisa portal (recommended)
  • Visa on arrival available at major international airports
  • Passport must be valid for at least six months beyond entry date
We recommend securing your visa prior to departure for a seamless arrival experience.

Health & Vaccination Requirements

A Yellow Fever certificate is required only if arriving from a Yellow Fever endemic country. Recommended for US, UK, and European travelers:
  • Routine vaccinations
  • Malaria prevention (consult your physician)
  • Travel clinic visit 6–8 weeks before departure
Your comfort and well-being remain our highest priority throughout your safari.

Travel Insurance Requirements

Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for all guests.
  • Medical coverage
  • Emergency evacuation
  • Trip cancellation protection
  • High-altitude coverage (for Kilimanjaro climbs)
For mountain trekking, coverage up to 6,000 meters is strongly advised.

Currency & Payment Information

The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), though US Dollars are widely accepted in safari regions.
  • US bills must be printed after 2009
  • Visa and Mastercard widely accepted at lodges
  • ATM access available in Arusha and Dar es Salaam
We recommend carrying small denominations for gratuities.

Tipping Guidelines on Safari

Tipping is customary and appreciated for excellent service.
  • Private Safari Guide: $70-$100 per guest per day
  • Lodge Staff: $10–$15 per guest per day (shared staff box)
  • Kilimanjaro Crew: Detailed guidance provided pre-departure
Gratuities are always discretionary.

Best Time to Visit Tanzania

Tanzania is a year-round safari destination.
  • June – October: Dry season, exceptional wildlife viewing
  • January – March: Calving season in the Serengeti
  • April – May: Green season, fewer visitors
Zanzibar offers warm tropical weather throughout the year.

Luggage Restrictions for Safari Flights

For fly-in safaris:
  • Soft-sided bags only
  • Maximum 15 kg (33 lbs), including hand luggage
Soft bags are recommended for all safari itineraries for ease of storage in 4×4 vehicles.

Electricity, Plugs & Wi-Fi

Tanzania uses UK-style Type G plugs (230V). Most luxury lodges offer Wi-Fi, though speeds may vary in remote areas. Many camps operate on solar power. A universal travel adapter is recommended.
