Overview

The Umbwe Route is the steepest and most direct route on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is known for its rapid ascent, dramatic ridges, and stunning views. Due to its fast altitude gain, it is recommended for experienced trekkers with strong physical fitness.

This 6-day itinerary joins the Machame Route at Barranco Camp and follows the southern circuit before summiting via Barafu Camp.

Day by Day Itinerary

Umbwe Cave Camp 2,850 m / 9,350 ft 10 km 5–7 hrs

After registration at Umbwe Gate, the trek begins with a steep climb through dense rainforest. The trail is narrow and less crowded compared to other routes. Climbers ascend rapidly to Umbwe Cave Camp for overnight stay.

Barranco Camp 3,960 m / 12,992 ft 6 km 4–5 hrs

The trail continues steeply through forest before entering the moorland and heath zones. The route follows a narrow ridge with spectacular views before descending slightly to Barranco Camp.

Karanga Camp 4,035 m / 13,238 ft 5 km 4–5 hrs

The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall climb. Though steep, it is non-technical. After reaching the top, the trail crosses valleys and ridges before arriving at Karanga Camp.

Barafu Camp 4,640 m / 15,223 ft 4 km 3–4 hrs

A steady ascent through alpine desert terrain leads to Barafu Camp. After lunch, climbers rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

Mweka Camp 3,100 m / 10,171 ft 17 km 10–14 hrs

The summit attempt begins around midnight. Climbers ascend slowly to Stella Point before continuing to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, the group descends to Mweka Camp for overnight stay.

1,640 m / 5,381 ft 10 km 3–4 hrs

The final descent passes through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Climbers receive summit certificates before transferring back to Moshi or Arusha.
