The Machame Route is one of the most scenic and popular routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” it offers diverse landscapes including rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and glacier zones.

This 7-day itinerary allows proper acclimatization, increasing summit success rates.

Day by Day Itinerary

Machame Camp 3,000 m / 9,843 ft 11 5–7 hrs

After breakfast and a short drive from Moshi or Arusha to Machame Gate, climbers complete park registration before beginning the trek through the lush rainforest. The trail is shaded by tall trees and often home to blue monkeys and colorful birds. The hike gradually ascends through dense vegetation to Machame Camp where dinner and overnight stay take place.

Shira Camp 3,840 m / 12,598 ft 5 km 4-6 hrs

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail climbs into the moorland zone with spectacular views of the Shira Plateau. The landscape becomes more open with giant heathers and volcanic rock formations. Climbers gain altitude steadily before reaching Shira Camp, located on a plateau with beautiful views of Kibo Peak.

Barranco Camp 3,960 m / 12,992 ft 10 km 6–8 hrs hrs

This is an important acclimatization day. The trek climbs slowly to Lava Tower, where climbers reach over 4,600m before descending to Barranco Camp. The route offers dramatic landscapes with alpine desert scenery and giant senecio plants.

Karanga Camp 4,035 m / 13,238 ft 5 km 4–5 hrs

The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall climb. Although steep, it is not technical and offers amazing views. After reaching the top, the trail continues across valleys and ridges before arriving at Karanga Camp for lunch and overnight stay.

Barafu Camp 4,640 m / 15,223 ft 4 km 3–4 hrs

A steady ascent through the alpine desert brings climbers to Barafu Camp. The landscape is rocky and exposed with spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak. After lunch, climbers rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

Mweka Camp 3,100 m / 10,171 ft 17 km 10–14 hrs

The summit attempt begins around midnight. Climbers ascend slowly toward Stella Point before reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, the group descends back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and continues to Mweka Camp.

1,640 m / 5,381 ft 10 km 3–4 hrs

The final day descends through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Climbers receive their summit certificates before transferring back to Moshi or Arusha for celebration and rest.
