Health, Vaccinations & Yellow Fever

Yellow fever rules, malaria, vaccinations and altitude on Kilimanjaro.

6 sections

Your comfort and well-being are our highest priority throughout your safari. A little preparation before you leave home makes all the difference.

1 Yellow Fever Requirements

Tanzania only requires a yellow fever certificate if you arrive from, or have transited for more than 12 hours through, a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission. This includes neighbouring Kenya, so it matters if you combine your trip with a Kenya safari. Travellers flying directly from the United States, the United Kingdom or Europe do not need one.

3 Malaria Prevention

Malaria is present in most of Tanzania below about 1,800 m, including the safari parks and Zanzibar. Ask your physician about anti-malarial medication, use insect repellent and wear long sleeves in the evenings. Most lodges and camps provide mosquito nets.

4 Altitude on Kilimanjaro

Uhuru Peak stands at 5,895 m, and altitude is the main challenge of the climb. Our routes allow time to acclimatise, and our guides check every trekker daily. Speak to your doctor before booking a climb, especially if you have a heart or lung condition.

5 Food, Water and Medicines

  • Drink only bottled or filtered water. Refrigerated water is always available in our Land Cruisers.
  • Bring enough prescription medicine for the whole trip, in its original packaging, plus a copy of the prescription.

6 Medical Care

Arusha and Moshi have private hospitals and clinics. In a serious emergency in a remote area, patients are evacuated by air ambulance, which is why emergency evacuation cover is so important. See our travel insurance guide.
