Packing & Luggage

What to pack, soft bags, the 15 kg flight limit, plugs and Wi-Fi.

5 sections

Packing light is part of the safari experience. These are the essentials, and the luggage rules to know before you fly.

1 Luggage

  • Soft-sided bags only on light-aircraft flights, with a maximum of 15 kg (33 lbs) per person, including hand luggage.
  • Soft bags are recommended on every itinerary, for easy storage in the Land Cruisers.
  • Plastic carrier bags are banned in Tanzania and may be taken from you on arrival.

2 Clothing

  • Neutral colours such as khaki, beige and olive. Avoid dark blue and black, which attract tsetse flies.
  • Camouflage clothing is not allowed in Tanzania.
  • Lightweight layers and a warm fleece for cool mornings and evenings, especially at the Ngorongoro Crater.
  • Comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Swimwear for lodge pools and Zanzibar, and modest clothing for Zanzibar's towns and villages.

3 Cameras and Electronics

  • A camera with spare batteries and memory cards, and binoculars.
  • Tanzania uses UK-style Type G plugs (230V), so bring a universal travel adapter.
  • Our Land Cruisers have electrical outlets for charging on the move.
  • Most lodges have Wi-Fi, though speeds vary in remote areas, and many camps run on solar power.

4 Laundry

Laundry services are available at all the hotels and lodges we use, for a fee, and some Premium Plus lodges offer complimentary laundry, so there is no need to pack an outfit for every day.

5 Kilimanjaro

Climbing Kilimanjaro needs specialist clothing and gear. A detailed trekking packing list is provided when you book.
