Visa & Entry Requirements

Tourist visas, the official eVisa, passports and arriving in Tanzania.

4 sections

Most travellers to Tanzania, including visitors from the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe, need a tourist visa. We recommend arranging yours before you fly, for a smooth arrival.

1 Applying for Your Visa

  • Apply online through the official Tanzania eVisa portal, visa.immigration.go.tz, a few weeks before you travel.
  • A single-entry tourist visa costs US$50 for most nationalities. US citizens receive a multiple-entry visa, which costs US$100.
  • Visas on arrival are also available at the main international airports, but queues can be long after a long flight.
  • Only use the official government website: unofficial visa websites charge extra fees.

Visa fees are set by the Tanzanian government and can change, so always check the official portal before you apply.

2 Passport Requirements

  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry.
  • It should have at least two blank pages for your visa and entry stamps.

3 Visiting Zanzibar

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so your Tanzanian visa is valid there. Zanzibar also requires every international visitor to buy its own inbound travel insurance online before arrival, in addition to your personal travel insurance. Ask us if you are unsure what you need.

4 Yellow Fever Certificate

A yellow fever certificate is only required if you arrive from, or have transited through, a country with a risk of yellow fever. See our health guide for details.
