Discover Lake Natron
Lake Natron is one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Africa. Lying in the Great Rift Valley close to the Kenyan border, this shallow, highly alkaline soda lake glows red and pink from the microorganisms that thrive in its warm, salty waters. Above it rises Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai's "Mountain of God", an active volcano and the only one in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava.
The Flamingos of Lake Natron
Lake Natron is the most important breeding site in East Africa for lesser flamingos. The caustic water keeps predators away from the nesting sites on the salt flats, and at the right time of year huge flocks gather along the shore, a spectacular sight against the red water and the rift wall.
Things to Do
Walk with Maasai guides to the flamingo flats at the lake shore, follow the Ngare Sero river through a gorge to a series of waterfalls where you can swim, and see ancient human footprints preserved in volcanic mud near Engare Sero. Experienced hikers can climb Ol Doinyo Lengai overnight to reach the crater rim at sunrise, a tough but unforgettable climb.
Getting There
Lake Natron is about four to five hours' drive from Arusha via Mto wa Mbu, on rough but scenic roads. It is also possible to continue north-west into the Serengeti through the Loliondo area, making Natron a memorable alternative route between Arusha and the park.
